passing through

Yesterday the Season’s first Koel called as if in error or warning – just a part-phrase then silence. Most likely in passing, as they’re often late setting-up here.

Rainbow Beach region birds

Hi All I’ll have a short holiday with the grandkids at Rainbow Beach QLD next week. I’m on the look out for those blasted Black-breasted Button-quails who seem to go on holiday when I’m able to get up there. If anyone has any recent reliable sightings from Inskip Point or nearby, I’d appreciate it. Also . . . → Read More: Rainbow Beach region birds

“Fly away home? Ice age may have clipped bird migration Study challenges traditional presumptions of migratory behaviour”

The question is whether migratory species can become sedentary due to other pressures.

Japan bird book

Hi all,

I’m going to be in Japan for a week on a cycling holiday and was wondering if anyone has recommendations for bird guides? (I mean a book, not a person..)

I’ll be with non-birders and there will be little time dedicated to birding, but want to be able to id the incidentals.

Does anyone living in the Melbourne area have some 8.5×42 Swarovski binoculars I can look through. I am thinking of buying some, but there are none available in Melbourne.

Thank you Elizabeth Lloyd.

Spring in Mulgoa Valley

Hi All.

We have had some good sightings in our part of Mulgoa Valley over the last week.

Best was a juvenile BAILLON’S CRAKE among the reeds on a dam, new for my local list.

A circling SWAMP HARRIER, with Brown Goshawk close by and a Nankeen Kestrel, CRESTED SHRIKE-TIT, AZURE KINGFISHER . . . → Read More: Spring in Mulgoa Valley

Channel-billed Cuckoos calling, Riflebird in the yard

First ones in Yungaburra for the year heard last Monday morning. We usually have our first about a week after Sydney. The PNG birds are slow starters.

Had a female riflebird in the yard for the first time in many years. We are about a kilometre from rainforest. Regards, Alan
