names

Hi all, I can understand the anger at having English names foisted on us from overseas. But directing this anger at “the boffins” is rather misdirected. Instead, take a look at the abysmal state of the processes we have (or rather, don’t have) in Australia for naming birds when a new name is required.

Corvids

Hello Judith,

Torresian Crows are being recorded further and further south, but in western Sydney, more likely to be Little Ravens.

Little Ravens are the resident corvids at Bowral, not far from western Sydney

Pinkies in Sydney

We saw the first Pink-eared Ducks I have ever seen on suburban Moore Reserve today. There were hundreds enjoying conditions out west but it was a nice surprise to see a pair mixing it with the Pac-Blacks, Ibis, joggers and dog walkers in this part of town.

There are other resources on that website, including some maps and advice, including what not to do: nightparrot.com.au/index.php/advice/#dodont

Corvids

I’m at a small shopping centre in Sydney’s inner west, & it seems like there’s both Australian Ravens & Torresian Crows present–

Is this possible?
