Duck hunting in Victoria

Duck hunting does more than destroy native waterbirds. It also sees Victorian wetlands polluted with plastic shotgun shells, bottles, cans and human waste. Perhaps worst of all, hunting makes some wonderful wetlands inaccessible for birdwatching three months of the year.

Roadkill

Travelling from Strathalbyn to Victor Harbour, SA, we picked up a roadkill which looks like a Southern Boobook. From Morcombe has a red dot in this area for halmaturina. Just wondering if this could be a significant find.

Spine-tailed swifts

20 swung over as this inner west Sydney morning for a couple of hours from at least 8.15 till at least 10.30. Cloudy but no rain since just before dawn. The seasonal migration north is well under way now the heat wave has broken.

Mid-morning a new call passed through here (SEQ 500m), VERY quiet– oh oh-oh-o Short & soft but solid, descending.
