Little Raven behaviour

We are staying in the caravan park at Portarlington on the Bellarine Peninsula, Victoria, while we are between permanent homes.

This morning, as I was making breakfast, I was watching several birds foraging on the recently vacated sites near our camp. A Little Raven found something that looked a bit like half a sausage. It . . . → Read More: Little Raven behaviour

Caneland Subdivisions Threaten Rare Birds

Populations of Eastern Grass Owl and other rare species on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast are being threatened by the residential subdivision of sugarcane farms, which supposedly is not permitted under state and local government regulations.

Cairns information request

My wife and I will be in the Cairns/Yorkeys Knob area early in May and would like to know if there have been any recent sightings of Rufous owls in that area. Also any other ideas for good places to find some of the birds of that region. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks…. Colin . . . → Read More: Cairns information request

The Australian Bird Guide

I picked my copy up from BirdLife Western Australia when they arrived yesterday (BWA sells it at $40 plus postage if you can’t pick it up from the office).

It is certainly a great book, and you can see the amount of detail they have gone to.

I like the text that is next to . . . → Read More: The Australian Bird Guide

Any father and child want to join a duo to Terrick this weekend?

Hi,

My son and I are planning to drive up to Terrick Terrick, leaving Saturday afternoon and returning Sunday evening. If there’s a father-child combo who wants to share, could be an ideal fit. We’ll be camping/spotlighting on Saturday night and obviously attempting to look for mutant Black-shouldered Kites. Call me on 0405220830.

Regards,

Simon.

Winter locations

Hi All,

I’m planning taking a week off to go birding in July while the missus is away (hiking Kokoda).

Ideally I’m thinking a driving trip from Sydney, but could also fly somewhere if it’s worth it.

Currently thinking either:

1) Sydney – Fitzroy Falls – Barren Grounds – down as . . . → Read More: Winter locations

Letter-winged Kite at Terrick Terrick NP (Vic)

Yesterday Dan Ashdown and Owen Lishmund reported a Letter-winged kite at Terrick Terrick NP in Victoria (see Birdline below). Apparently it was with 6 Black-shouldered Kites. Question – is it unusual to have so many Black-shouldered Kites together? I don’t think I’ve seen more than a couple.

Hoping this bird is the first of many.
