white-eared monarch near Border Ranges NP

Maybe it’s not such an unusual sighting, but I’ve often travelled Simes Road to Border Ranges NP over the past 30 years or so, and this is the first time I’ve seen a white-eared monarch. Just downhill from the BRNP, in early April, it was feeding amongst eucalypt foliage in open forest adjoining grazing country, . . . → Read More: white-eared monarch near Border Ranges NP

Spectacled Monarch Wonboyn Lake, NSW.

Hi all,

Marlene Lyall and I have just had a very pleasant few days of birding around the Wonboyn Lake area on the far south NSW coast. We went down mainly for the Eden pelagic trip but sadly that was cancelled because 3 people backed out at the last minute and replacements could not be . . . → Read More: Spectacled Monarch Wonboyn Lake, NSW.

Island Monarch on Cassini Island, Kimberley, WA

BARC has received an excellent submission from Merrick Ekins of an Island Monarch seen and photographed on Cassini Island off the Kimberley coast in WA on 15 October 2010. This species has not previously been recorded as occurring anywhere in Australia other than on the external territory of Ashmore Reef. First seen at Ashmore in . . . → Read More: Island Monarch on Cassini Island, Kimberley, WA

Black-faced Monarch arrival in the Blue Mountains

Late yesterday afternoon (20th Sept), heard my first Black-faced Monarch for the season at the Scenic World boardwalk in the Jamison Valley, Katoomba NSW. I was down there from pre-dawn yesterday but it didn’t call in the morning, so perhaps only arrived during the day.

Cheers,

Carol

RE Nikon Monarchs and don’t put your binos on the car roof!(Bob Dawson)

I have the Monarch 10×42, bought 18 months ago. I think they are excellent and a reasonable price, and I havent had any problems with the eye cups.

RE Nikon Monarchs and don’t put your binos on the car roof!(Bob Dawson)

I’ve had no trouble with the eyecups, although I’ve only had them a few months. I wear glasses, so the cups are wound right in all the time. I don’t know if the problems other people have had with them are because they’re fragile and are exposed to damage when wound out, or if they’re . . . → Read More: RE Nikon Monarchs and don’t put your binos on the car roof!(Bob Dawson)

Hi Bob,

I have a pair of the Nikon Monarch 10×42’s. The optics are great for the price, but the eyepieces can be a bit of a trial at times. I recommend the 10×42 for all round birding …… i imagine the next size up would be a bit cumbersome, although i haven’t tried . . . → Read More: RE Nikon Monarchs and don’t put your binos on the car roof!(Bob Dawson)

Nikon Monarchs and don’t put your binos on the car roof!

I bought some Pentax DCF ED 8×43 that I like although they can be near the $1000 limit. I bought mine in Sydney at Bintel and at the time they were very competitive with US online and there was instant gratification. I suspect the AUD will probably continue to fall while there is uncertainty in . . . → Read More: Nikon Monarchs and don’t put your binos on the car roof!

And don’t forget that Customs include freight costs and any customs agents fees in that AUD 1000 figure. If you are over, Customs bases its fees on the landed price of the shipment, not just on the nett price of the shipment. I have learnt that to my cost.

Cheers,

Carl Clifford
