Recent offerings from the Sunshine Coast region have included multiple sightings of Ground Parrot near Noosa; some nice encounters with Marbled Frogmouth and Australian Owlet-Nightjar; and the occurrence of three monarch species – White-eared, Spectacled and Black-faced – together at several sites.

SEQ White-eared Monarch & snake musings

All, At least two pairs of White-eared Monarchs have started breeding on my forested block outside of Brisbane. They are actively chasing and calling each other from thicket to thicket and across open patches of lantana and grasslands. On Sunday, I even had one sitting on top of the house calling from an old TV . . . → Read More: SEQ White-eared Monarch & snake musings

HANZAB Vol 7 & Black-winged Monarch

Well, there I was researching Black-winged Monarch and wanting to check if there are actually any migrant records of M. f. canescens from Torres Strait as there seem to be none in PNG, so I haul out the trusty HANZAB, see the plate with the requisite monarchs, then find my copy is missing pp 41-56 . . . → Read More: HANZAB Vol 7 & Black-winged Monarch

Black-winged Monarch RFI

The more you study the less you know- it was not until earlier this year that I realized how distinct the Cape York subspecies canescens of Black-winged Monarch is from the 3 other subspecies in New Guinea. Our bird is much more like Black-faced Monarch in face pattern, whereas with the other 3 races the . . . → Read More: Black-winged Monarch RFI

monarch behaviour

Can anyone tell me whether black-faced monarchs males have any particular display to their females? Today I saw an immature male perched on a branch and several times he spread his wings and tail and ducked his head from side to side sort of like he was fixing the feathers on the undersides of his . . . → Read More: monarch behaviour
