Nikon Monarchs and don’t put your binos on the car roof!

The current import GST free cut-off is $1000. You may still get a note from customs directing you to their web site & instruction to complete multiple forms even though the cost (not including postage) is less than $1000. However if you email them instead with the invoice & the notice ID they will politely . . . → Read More: Nikon Monarchs and don’t put your binos on the car roof!

[Birding-Aus] Nikon Monarchs and don’t put your binos on the car roof!

Thanks everybody so far. I appreciate the comments and it seems the Monarchs are pretty good. A little concerned about the problem with the eye cups mentioned by Chris. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Another pair I was thinking of looking at are the Vanguard 10.5×45 Endeavour ED. Also getting good raps but . . . → Read More: [Birding-Aus] Nikon Monarchs and don’t put your binos on the car roof!

B&H is great. They were selling the older monarchs for USD120 last year – a steal compared to aus pricing, even with postage. For more expensive items customs will want 10% GST + about $50 handling charge; it’s best to check with them what the cutoff price is, from memory it’s around $500.

Nikon Monarchs and don’t put your binos on the car roof!

I’ve recently bought a pair of Nikon Monarch III 8×42’s. The labelling of the various Monarch series seems to vary a bit, so it’s likely that they’re actually the same ones you mention, unless they still have old stock. The III series is a current model, as is the X series.

My previous pair were . . . → Read More: Nikon Monarchs and don’t put your binos on the car roof!

Nikon Monarchs and don’t put your binos on the car roof!

Hi all

I am in the market for a new pair of binos having driven off after stupidly leaving my Bushnells on the top of the car while doing some spot lighting on a recent trip to Darwin. Not a great loss as they were a 10 year old $200 pair on their last legs . . . → Read More: Nikon Monarchs and don’t put your binos on the car roof!

An early monarch

Hi Laurie,

I had a mature spectacled monarch here (Cedar Creek, Gold Coast Hinterland just to NE of Mt Tamborine) about 3 weeks ago and also a rufous fantail, which from my records over the past 10 years is about a month early, normally they both arrive end of August or early September. This year . . . → Read More: An early monarch

An early monarch

I was surprised to see a Spectacled Monarch in the closed canopy section of the Roma St Parklands in Brisbane today. They are more of a summer bird around here, and definitely not a species I would expect to see in inner Brisbane [1 km from the GPO].

Regards, Laurie. ===============================

From Birding-Aus

There are four categories of bird found in Australia (mainland and Tas): 1. Vagrants; these are birds from outside the region and are found in ones and twos or small numbers and not regularly, they do not breed. 2. Winter visitors from northern hemisphere, mainly waders; these come here in our summer during the northern . . . → Read More: From Birding-Aus

Cassowaries, Thickknees and the Great Barrier Grief

The advent of the third decade of the twenty first century has delivered overlapping health and climate crises. These have impacted on our birding and travel activities.

Covid restrictions have ruled out overseas travel, and interstate ventures are uncertain. The repeated experience of trips cancelled at the last moment means that travel planning has become . . . → Read More: Cassowaries, Thickknees and the Great Barrier Grief

Rain at Gluepot..

Unless the roads have been upgraded since we were last there, rain of any significance at Gluepot results in a “Glue Pot”, and stranding until the roads dry out.

Not a bad place to be locked down though, depending on who else is there.
