Solomons’ swallow

I have recently been to the Solomon Islands. In the gorgeous village church, there was a pair of martins, or swallows without a swallow-tail, with a small nest on a flouro light fitting on the ceiling that liked to do laps during the singing of hymns. They weren’t a species I recognised; I couldn’t detect . . . → Read More: Solomons’ swallow

St Petersburg

It seems like there will be lots of Aussies over in St Petersburg next year. Meg & I will also be there and we’re lucky enough to be there twice – for 3 days towards the end of June and then 2 days during the 2nd week of July. I’ve been doing research through eBird . . . → Read More: St Petersburg

Birding St Petersburg

Have you tried Birding Pal? www.birdingpal.org/Russia.htm

They might be able to put you on to someone.

I too am interested in your thread as we will also be in St Petersburg for a day next year and it would be nice to tick off one or two Russian birds. Carol Abbott

RFI St Petersburg

A few years ago I got involved in assisting the authors of the 2005 book BIRDS IN EUROPEAN CITIES Edited by John G. Kelcey and Goetz Rheinwald. At the end of that process my review of the book got published in Emu. As it happens St Petersburg is one of the cities described. St Petersburg . . . → Read More: RFI St Petersburg

RFI

Hi All

Next year I anticipate being in St Petersburg for one day. Does anyone have any information about birding for a day there? Are there any reliable bird guides based there? Any info about what can or cannot be done would be appreciated.

Thank you

The Flying Kangaroo

Anyone notice the cover of the Qantas Nov-Dec magazine? The cover advertises a story about the best beaches/beach holidays in Australia and use an image of a child running through a flock of what look like Laughing Gulls. I guess they might still call Australia home, but they are not very familiar with it!

Christmas & Cocos Nov and Dec 2016 trip summary

Hello all, We’ve recently finished our two regular November and December birding trips to Australia’s Christmas Island and Cocos Keeling Islands. Both fourteen day trips involved a week on each island and were hugely successful. All the endemics were seen well, as were the island’s specialties and an incredible list of rarities. Local endemics included: . . . → Read More: Christmas & Cocos Nov and Dec 2016 trip summary

Birdlife International Taxonomy List Update

Birdlife International (HWB) has recently updated their list (now Version 9), I have been slowly working through the list. I’m only a short way into the passerines. Of interest so far

a) Non-passarines remain substantially unchanged from Version 8 b) Passerines have been completely reordered. c) some of the changes that effect Australia are – . . . → Read More: Birdlife International Taxonomy List Update

Field guide (or Android app) for India/Nepal

Any recommendation for central/northern India and Nepal? I have the 2003 Grimmett/Inskio “Birds of Northern India” – I will also be going into NW Maharashtra (Tadoba NP) and that is not covered by the book. Thanks Dave

Sacred Kingfisher, Fitzroy Gardens, Melbourne

There was a Sacred Kingfisher calling loudly from an Elm in the Fitzroy Gardens at about 7:15 this morning. I wasn’t able to spot the bird itself, though.

They turn up here once every few years, although they more normally hang around the pond near the JFK memorial in the Treasury Gardens across the road.
