Magpie behaviour

Hi, Does anybody out there know why magpies (sample photo attached on one caught at home) lie in the full sun on the hottest days in summer sometimes for 15 to 20 minutes. Some cooling mechanism?  Any journal articles available?   Many thanks   David in Blackheath

No, I don't think the subspecies was determined. However, its accepted on the WA Museum's Checklist of the Birds of Western Australia with a note: "Mutilated bird found aboard a vessel at Barrow I. Really interesting stuff! Nigel do we know what the Elegant subspecies was on the Pilbara boat?
