I was wondering if anyone can help id this feather, found today in Docklands, Melbourne. My guess is Little Wattlebird, but I thought it should have a white tip if it is.

ALAN traps Silver Gulls?
In the December 2018 issue of Wingspan, there's an article about the dangers of ALAN (artificial light at night) to birds because it upsets their night navigation abilities (Fatal Attraction, John Peter, p53). It offers Silver Gulls as a local example:"Silver Gulls provide the most conspicuous examples of ALAN-related discombulation in Australia, with their white forms obvious as they swirl above floodlit city landmarks or night matches at arenas."I'd always believed the story that they're feeding on flying insects, not confused and lost. To: <birding-aus-owner@birding-aus.org>John Darnell advises that an Elegant Pitta arrived at Barrow Island on a ship and sailed off on same ship when it departed without coming ashore!! He says photos show it to be the white-chinned race vigorsii sometimes split as a full species. I’ve not been given the dates of its ‘stay’. There are as yet no records for Australia.

Lewin’s Rails feeding young reported on birdline – Lake Hamilton, Vic
Marion Halliday has reported seeing Lewin's Rails with young (at least 5, possibly 6) at Lake Hamilton via the Birdline Victoria Facebook group. She says one was seen feeding one of the young a worm "a couple of times" on the evening of 29/10/18, and posted a photo of an adult with a worm, side by side with one of the young ones (see attached). The young are at the little fluffball stage.
Has anyone seen this with Lewin's Rails before?HANZAB says "Role of parents in building nest, incubation and care of young not known", "adults accompany and defend chicks", and that young are "Precocial, nidifugous". Nothing about actually feeding young. I've seen young ones of this size before, but not even associating with adults, let alone being fed.Peter Shute

How we hear birds
This thing is doing the rounds of Facebook, etc, at the moment – a recording of a voice that sounds like it’s saying either Laurel or Yanny depending on how good your high frequency hearing is.

If different people can hear such different things from one recording, is it any wonder the bird call descriptions in field guides don’t make sense to everyone?
