Bustard in SA.

After hearing about a bustard seen on Hindmarsh Is I took off to look for it since they are quite uncommon in coastal SA. I can advise where I saw it if anyone wants directions.

Tony.

WTNs at Opera, WKs at Avoca, NPs

Hi All,

On Friday evening there was a group of about six WTNTs over Lady Macquaries’s Chair near the Sydney Botanic Gardens, possibly attracted by Carmen, the Opera on the Harbour, more likely the low storm clouds. Fruit bats as well.

Newly Described Aus Ringneck – B. z. parkeri

Laurie,

It was described in Emu 116(4) last year. All Birdlife Australia members now get free access to Emu online – which I think BLA deserves big credit for – the paper can be found at www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1071/MU16005

Short answer to your question is that they are found in the far NE of South Australia and . . . → Read More: Newly Described Aus Ringneck – B. z. parkeri

Latham’s Snipe

Thx, Tom. During March is when I’ve seen them fattening at this site. Also, if you “follow” the Latham’s Snipe Project (WordPress) you’ll see they’re still moving at this time. (They’re then gone from here by April.) Cheers Judith

Newly Described Aus Ringneck – B. z. parkeri

G’day

I was working my way through the 2017 IOC v7.1 checklist and noticed a newly described race of the Aus Ringneck – B. z. parker. IOC refers to “Forshaw & Joseph, 2016” and notes its range is NE South Australia, SW Queensland.

Does anyone have any information on this race [e.g. a map of . . . → Read More: Newly Described Aus Ringneck – B. z. parkeri

Cash for Night Parrot.

How are they going to show someone a Night Parrot ?

Walk in a line and kick every Spinifex bush to flush one.

Sit in a group and run playbacks all night .

Or tell them “Sorry you should have been here last week, they were here then ”

It took weeks if not . . . → Read More: Cash for Night Parrot.

Latham’s Snipe

Does anyone know if LSnipe will forage in the rain? Yesterday afternoon/evening I saw none at my usual March-staging observation-post — It was rainy & misty, but being wetland-birds northering & feeding-up, they seemed worth looking for, as I was passing. Judith SEQ wetland 400m

other numbers

– After a start with few Cuckoos, by midsummer the count had progressed to zero, & now there has been no northering cuckoo migration seen or heard here. (Even the non-migrant, non-parasitic Pheasant Coucals have this season been conspicuously silent.)

– There have been horribly few WTNs to report to MikeT.

numbers

Since I wrote about this in 2015, Galah numbers in my bit of country have fallen to zero. Last time I saw any here they were 4 flashing through. As I probably said last time I wrote, Galah numbers had increased steadily from the late 1990s until the decline which began in the 20teens. As . . . → Read More: numbers
