Big White Bird Survey: annual Cockatoos & Ibis count 11th October

Looking at the website, it appears that the organisers are after sightings of birds banded/tagged in Sydney. They are interested in the dispersion / movement of these tagged birds. Regards, Laurie. Pallid cuckoos 2015

Hi all, We have good numbers of Pallid calling between Wollar – Gulgong and Mudgee in central NSW at present. Heard one calling in fairly dense shrubby woodland at Munghorn Gap NR last week. Have been around in healthy numbers. Interestingly I saw some calling Pallid Cuckoos and Horsefields Bronze Cuckoos as well as Rufous Songlark all calling in late July (25th) on the edge of Jacks Creek SF (Pilliga) near Baan Baa NSW earlier this year. Albany Pelagics Oct 24th & 25th – spaces available

Hi all, The next weekend of pelagic trips out of Albany is scheduled for the weekend of the 24th and 25th of October, and we still have a couple of spaces on both days. If you’d like a place on either (or both) trips, please let me know. If you have any queries, please also feel free to ask We will meet at Emu Point Boat Harbour in Albany at 0630, and travel to the Albany Canyon at the continental shelf edge. We are hoping to catch some passage of species returning south, as well as the usual albatross, petrel and shearwater species. As always, the trips will operate on a cost-share basis; the cost is anticipated to be $160/person/trip with a full boat of 18, increasing if we don’t fill the boat (e.g. to $190 with 15 people Cheers, John

Sossa Pelagics

Hi all A rough sea on the 27th September from Kiama NSW produced a great variety of sea birds. Visit the SOSSA website for details. The trip was filmed by the ABC Lateline program and hopefully will go to air on Thursday 1st October. The main story is about the work of Sossa with respect to the Wandering Albatross. A must see for the sea bird tragics. Lateline on ABC news 24 at 9.30 p.m.and ABC at 10.30 p.m. I will update if there is any change to the program date. Cheers Jim

Firsts for the Yarra in Ivanhoe

Hi all, Bill here I heard my first Sacred Kingfisher (for the season, at least) while walking on the Yarra this morning. It complements the Fan-tailed Cuckoo a week or so back. The other thing that was a first for me, yesterday at the same spot (between the Wilson Reserve and the Bourke Road bridge) I saw a platypus swimming slowly downstream in the middle of the river. At first I simply saw a wake coming towards me, with no obvious cause – I initially thought it was a duck, but then thought it might have been a Darter swimming mostly underwater, or possibly an eel. After a while I got a good look at it from high on a bank, and realised what it was. I’ve never seen a platypus in the wild anywhere before, and to see one in the Yarra in the metropolitan area was quite a pleasant shock.
