Hi all, Bill here I heard my first Sacred Kingfisher (for the season, at least) while walking on the Yarra this morning. It complements the Fan-tailed Cuckoo a week or so back. The other thing that was a first for me, yesterday at the same spot (between the Wilson Reserve and the Bourke Road bridge) I saw a platypus swimming slowly downstream in the middle of the river. At first I simply saw a wake coming towards me, with no obvious cause – I initially thought it was a duck, but then thought it might have been a Darter swimming mostly underwater, or possibly an eel. After a while I got a good look at it from high on a bank, and realised what it was. I’ve never seen a platypus in the wild anywhere before, and to see one in the Yarra in the metropolitan area was quite a pleasant shock.

Hi Bill, I’ve seen one a couple of years ago at Banyule Flats. There is a platypus sighting site and I’m sure they’d be delighted to have your sighting put in. It’s http://platypusspot.org/, and someone saw one in the river near Hamer Hall in the city! Sonja
