Tenth anniversary of our Victorian Big Year!

Yesterday marked the tenth anniversary of the end of Ruth’s and my Victorian Big Year – or VicTwitch.

In 2010 we saw 392 species in Victoria – a record that still stands today. Completing any sort of a Big Year requires a huge amount of commitment and planning – and, most importantly, it requires help and assistance from a network of friends, acquaintances and other birders. On Facebook, in the birding-aus group, I’ve posted a selection of images that show some of the highlights from the year, most notably our trips away to the far-flung corners of the state, and just a few of the people we met up with along the way. We covered all the birding regions in Victoria and saw many state rarities – and, of course, we missed a number of birds that were seen by others. That year will always go down as a highlight in our birding career not least because of the firm friendships that we made that continue to today.

Happy New Year, everyone!
