Is it A Peregrine or a Hobby

A couple of people have queried whether the photo on my last blog is a Peregrine Falcon or an Australian Hobby. Maybe you can tell.

I thought it was a juvenile Peregrine… but it wouldn’t be the first time…

I’ve put another photo of the bird on my blog plus a Kestrel and a few camels for good measure.

  1. Hi Chris, Looks like a Hobby to me. Note how the barring stops around the undertail coverts and vent (I’m sure someone will correct me for wrong terminology here which would be great!) – Peregrine should be barred all the way down. Also the mask looks a bit soft edged to me. I always think of Peregrines as having a really strongly demarcated mask. Happy to be corrected for sure. Cheers Dave

  2. I agree with Martin. Definitely an Australian Hobby. Peregrines tend to be more bulky, especially the females, and have a white chest and full black cap. The whitish area on the neck of the Hobby is distinctive. Nice photo of a nice bird.

    Your falcon is an Australian Hobby.

    With more practise, you will find that they get a bit easier – nice shot too!
