Norway, there is not all that much choice this time a year, nor is there much daylight. This year the Black-billed Magpie won ut over the Hooded Crow ,and these are the two birds I have seen hitherto; on the other hand, there are many of them. We have overcast weather, light frost, after we have had temperatures just above freezing for most of the Christmas holidays—first time in my 40 years here–, and there is about 2 ft of snow on the ground. Few land birds, although the occasional Great and Willow Tit show up at my feeders, and there are House Sparrows here and there in town. Yesterday Riet and i walked along the shore of the sound here (That never freezes over) and there are more birds there: Flocks of Northern Eider, a few Common Scoters, a Red-breasted Merganser. Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls and Great Cormorants. A Winter-clad Black Guillemot was unexpected, we rarely see them in town. I wish all Birding-Aussers an excellent 2014, at home, at work and at play.   2. Happy New Year to all birding-aus readers also from Finland! Not much to report from here. The winter has been exceptionally warm thus far, and even though I live in the northern part of Finland, we lost the little snow we had left just after Christmas (unfortunately it was a “black” Christmas in most parts), but luckily had some fresh snow on New Year’s eve to bring some light into the darkness. The first bird for me was a Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) on my bird feeder, and two lovely European Crested Tits (Lophophanes cristatus) waiting in line. Other birds were a Great Tit (Parus major), a Blue Tit (Parus caeruleus) and a Common Magpie (Pica pica) without forgetting the resident 3 Eurasian Red Squirrels. Still 2-3 months to go until spring finally kicks in gear – seems like forever at the moment. This winter is predicted to be good for Aurora Borealis, and even though we’ve had a few decent displays until now, it’s been too cloudy to see anything in 3 weeks. Here’s hoping that the skies will clear out and the fires in the sky will lit up. Noisy Miner? … My New Year’s resolution for 2014 is to spend time birding, not just thinking about birding as I did in 2013… So, if I’d been paying the attention when I woke up my first bird would most probably have been Noisy Miner (or CBC if i’d had a bad night) – but I’m out of practice so can’t actually say what it was – great start! Maybe I should sign up to the Bird a Day 2014… Happy New Birding Year everyone!   7. First heard in Epping, NSW were Channel-billed Cuckoos around 4am. First seen were Musk Lorikeets in our Lemon scented Gum at 7 am.   17. Young Grey Butcherbird calling for food at my sister in law’s house in Eltham. Its mother appeared soon after. It was very pleasant listening to the Butcherbirds while sipping morning coffee.   33. As I walked onto the deck of our Bruny Island shack, for the first time this morning, 6 Swift parrots broke from the eucalypts across the road, making them my first birds. It has been a joy to have them constantly chattering and moving around over the last week.
