Yandina – BirdLife Southern Queensland State Government Petition

Good Morning Everyone, I know that you are aware of the stellar work that Greg Robert’s has been doing to save the Yandina Creek Wetlands. Most of you are also aware that the wetlands were drained just over 2 weeks ago. Many of you have signed Greg’s petition to Greg Hunt, asking for intervention and funding at a federal level. BirdLife Australia and BirdLife Southern Queensland are also actively involved in this campaign. If these wetlands are to be preserved we need to influence the 3 tiers of government. I hope you will take the time to follow the link below to our petition to Dr Steven Miles, Queensland Minister of Environment and Heritage Protection urging him to provide the financial assistance required to enable the Sunshine Coast Council to purchase and permanently protect this nationally significant site. http://www.birdlife.org.au/locations/birdlife-southern-queensland/help-us-save-yandina-creek-wetlands You do not have to be a member of BirdLife Australia to support this petition. My apologies for any cross postings. Kind regards Judith Judith Hoyle | Convenor BirdLife Southern Queensland Mobile: 0437549301 PO Box 375 Annerley Q 4103 southernqld@birdlife.org.au |birdlife.org.au ABN 75 149 124 744 birds are in our nature

Thanks Judith for the update. I did sign the petition and the standard letter and I guess, like others, who would have done the same, last week I got a standard response letter from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council thanking me and advising what worthy environmental causes the council have already funded and how Yandina Wetlands, regrettably is not considered a priority. The recent excellent articles run in ‘the Australian’ (today’s) showing that the drained area is not artificial in fact, and then the article (last week?) sparking debate about a key principle at the centre of environmental decision-making in Australia (whether an environmentally significant area deserves protection if it has been shaped by human activity) are ‘game changers’ surely and strong reasons for all of us to write back to the Sunshine Coast Regional Council to let them know their response is not good enough given the latest developments and debate.
