Winter at the Western Treatment Plant

A lovely crisp, sunny, winter’s day at the Western Treatment Plant
(Werribee, VIC) on Sunday produced some nice sightings, including:

Several Banded Lapwing back at the ‘usual’ site

Maybe 30 Banded Stilt (at Avalon Beach ponds)

Eight raptor species, including a fine close Spotted Harrier, a Collared
Sparrowhawk perched on a fence-post getting some morning rays, and maybe 5
Australian Kestrels

A pair of Fan-tailed Cuckoos

More Cattle Egrets than I have previously seen in southern Victoria (about
12, including one standing on a sheep’s back) – and 20+ White-faced Herons
on a single pond

The ‘resident’ pair of Brolgas flying by

A dozen Red-kneed Dotterel (at Avalon Beach ponds)

30 or so Australasian Gannets diving on fish out in Corio Bay

A little group of 4 (juvenile?) Little Egrets

A single uncoloured Flame Robin

4 Spotted Crakes along a single tidal “creek”, with a calling Lewins Rail
close by (including the first time I have heard the distinctive and rather
bizarre ‘galloping’ call other than on tape)

A Spiny-cheeked Honeyeater

Richard Nowotny (and Diana Bryant)
