Hi all, I was camping at Roaring Meg on Monday night when a bird called. It was about 2am, and cloudy, so it was dark. By the sound of it, the bird was flying around the campsite. The call sounded a bit (actually quite a lot) like Spotted Nightjars I’ve heard in the Big Desert, so I guessed it was a White Throated, which would have been a tick. But – no see, no tick. But aren’t they a Summer visitor? Does anyone know if some of these birds overwinter, and if not, what the bird could have been? Bill

That’s interesting. Does anyone have any alternatives? Roaring Meg is a small area of damp cool rainforest, full of leeches and moss, pretty different to most of the rest of the Prom. It’s also got a good drop toilet, so if anyone wants to go check it out, it’s an easy 15 km or so from the car park. I’d be fascinated to know what it might have been. Neither ebird nor birdata have any WTNJ records at all for Wilsons Promontory, at any time of year. Peter Shute Sent from my iPad

Hi Bill, We sometimes get winter records of the White-throated Nightjar on the New South Wales north coast and I have had a breeding record in August but I would be surprised if they over-wintered as far south as Victoria. Maybe they do!!! Regards Greg Dr Greg. P. A birder I know claimed he heard one once in Croajingolong NP during June, maybe some do hang around? I have no idea but would be keen to hear what others think.
