UK visit.

Greetings all,

My wife and I are heading to the UK late September for 7 – 8 weeks. We’ll have a mobile home and hope to take in Cornwall, Ireland, Scotland and parts of England. Nothing is planned yet and we nothing about UK birding or key places. Can someone please help kick start our trip with some advice?

    Gary,

    If you hook on to the birding pals web site ( problem with my laptop so I cannot add the link; sorry ) you will be able to see if a local birder can take you out birding; I have had some great birding day trips in South Africa by asking on birding pals; I also had some great help in Oz by using this group

    If you can email me your route and will happily provide you with some additional ideas. If you get into the Chilterns, in Buckinghamshire ( not known for lots of mega sightings! ) I would be happy to take you birding and, maybe, find you some mammals as well, such as glis glis( Chilterns only; they get in our loft ) muntjac ( spreading from Chilterns and one in our garden as I write this ) and badger

    Hello Gary,

    I lived in the UK in 1990, 1994 and again in 2008. Birding in the UK is a big business and a very popular activity even though at times you get the feeling that the birdwatchers outnumber the birds.

    If you are only going for 8 weeks I suggest that you use the facilities of the RSPB. This is the largest conservation organisation in the world with over a million members and a budget of £95 million. They have 200 reserves located all over the UK. Start by looking at their website: http://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/ In 8 weeks full time you will only see a fraction of what they have to offer. Many reserves have an admission charge. This covers the provision of excellent hides and other maintance.

    The Wildfowl and Wetlands trust (WWT) specialise in wetland birds. They have ten reserves of which Slimbridge is the biggest and best as well as being close to your likely route. See:http://www.wwt.org.uk/visit-us/slimbridge/ Arundel in West Sussex is also worth a visit.

    September is a bit too late for some of the UK’s special birds. The Puffins will have bred and will all be out in the ocean. The Ospreys of Scotland will also have left for Africa. as will a good number of other migratory species.

    Still you will have a great birding holiday in the UK. You will find the Brits initially reserved as one would expect in such an overpopulated place. However the birders will be as friendly as birders are all over the world.
