Hello everyone, I received this extraordinary video from a friend in the UK https://www.youtube.com/embed/qoaEBb4IN4Q?rel=0 The magpie could have been hand-reared in the household in close company with the puppy, and learnt ‘dog-play’ – even though there are apparently another dog and a cat there as well. But maybe not. I have come across a video of a wild corvid developing an intimate relationship with a cat – even to the extent of feeding it tidbits. Australian Magpies (and other highly social bird species like Galahs) are known to play – even rolling down slopes for fun. I just did a quick google search and found quite a few videos showing unnatural friendships between birds and pets – mainly budgies and cockatiels associating intimately with domestic cats. A solution to the feral cat problem? Get them to learn to love birds! Cheers, Richard — Richard Jordan PO Box 449 Bellingen NSW 2454 02 6655 9456 0428385677

Hi Richard
we have had a few ‘pet’ magpies over the years and they have all had this playful streak, with each other, the dog, cat or even us!
i have even seen the local gang playing with each other just like the in video.
here’s a great site to visit for more magpie antics http://www.magpieaholic.com/
