My name is Bernie O’Keefe and I am a member of Birdlife Australia. I am especially interested in Quail-thrushs. I have photographed the Chestnut breasted at Bowra and the Chesnut backed at Gluepot but I am having difficulty locating the Spotted Quail Thrush in Victoria. Can anyone please give me advice as to where a reliable spot for these birds can be found. I live in Melbourne. Hi Bernard, Another good spot for Spotted Quail-thrush in sunny Victoria is just south of the Whroo Historical Area, Rushworth SF. Last time I was in the area, there was pair here -36.655342,145.018715. Hi Bernie, By far your best bet is the Brisbane Ranges – to the west of Melbourne. I usually find that Nelson Track is the best. You’ll need to park at the start of the track and walk a kilometre or so until you get to a clearer area on a crest. You’ll know the site because there’s a boot-cleaning station there (to remove traces of Cinnamon Fungus). If you sit and wait patiently here, you should be able to find a Spotted Quail-thrush. I’m sure that there are other similar areas (look for tracks with crests and ridgelines – the birds prefer this sort of location.
