I received this message from one of my brothers. Can you help?
I think I have only seen single species formation flights of such birds too. (I think smaller waders do fly in mixed groups)
The locality would have been Princes Freeway, in the vicinity of Serendip, Hovells Creek and Western Treatment Plant (between Laverton and Geelong) Wendy
Wendy,
Spotted an interesting event last Friday on the way home. 3 pelicans and 3 white ibis flying in close formation. They were heading south over the freeway from the land fill site toward the sewerage farm. The ibis were in front. We didn’t mange to get a photo. They had split up by the time we pulled over and found a gap in the trees.
Its the first time I can remember seeing two different types of birds in formation like this.
Linz.

A correction on the locality of this observation… wendy
“Minor correction, not the Corio land fill.. (near Hovels creek), but the big one on Wests Rd, just SW of Werribee between the Geelong rail line and the Geelong road/Princes freeway. ”
After the footage of the Pelicans feeding in/on the Gannet?? (or whatever sp, I forget now) colony on the Bird episode of ‘Life’ on ABC TV the other night, maybe the Ibis should be a little wary!? Wendy

I often see a few Straw-necked Ibis in with a flock of White Ibis, and vice versa, but I’ve never seen a pelican in with them.

A few years ago I saw a large V of White Ibis on the Bellarine Peninsula with a lone Pelican in the lead. And recently (also in that area) another smaller V of White Ibis with a Pelican in the formation – but not leading.
