Ostrich South East NSW

Hey all,

last week (7th) I spotted a pair of Ostrich from the window of a bus while travelling South from Sydney to Berridale. They must have been just before Bredbo or in between this town and Cooma on the West side of the Monaro Hwy in a fenced paddock. I’m unaware how common Ostrich farming/keeping is and have never heard any reports of the species or its credibility in this area so any information would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I saw and photographed a pair of ostriches a couple of years ago on the western side of the Monaro Highway just north of Cooma.  Sounds like it must be the same birds!

Max, I would be interested to know whether you saw a ‘pair’ or whether it was 2 males. While working in Queanbeyan recently I had a day trip to Jindabyne – on the return trip one of my colleagues said, watch out for the Ostriches along here. And sure enough two distant male ostriches were seen. Apparently they have been on this property (and I suspect the same site you saw them) for years. As they are two males, not much chance of a self-sustaining population and definitely farmed birds (so no tick unfortunately for you). Cheers, Peter

There is an Ostrich and Emu farm at Tullymorgan near Maclean, north coast NSW. I am not sure whether it is still commercial or not.

they were farmed intensively in the Riverina and in South Australia – the National Library’s PictureAustralia online picture archive has dozens of pics of farmed ostriches at places like Yanco and Port Augusta. My grandfather, now long gone, remembered the ostrich farms around Leeton in the Riverina in the 1920s

    Max,

I am not surprised. Before retirement, I was an Inspector under the NSW Non-Indigenous Act for NSW Ag. Around the end of the last century, Ostrich farming was one of “great new things” in agriculture. If I remember rightly, there were properties, small & large, running Ostrich on the NSW Southern Tablelands. The climate seemed to agree with them.

I am not surprised they are not seen as escapees. Ostriches are, as are Deer, Bison, Yak, etc., generally kept out of sight from main roads.

Ostriches are Category 4 under the Act, which places no restrictions on the keeping or bringing into the State. You have the same restrictions on keeping them as any other livestock, for that is essentially what they are , legally. There is at least one abattoir , probably on the East Coast, which handles Ostrich, as fresh, non- imported, product is available to our catering trade.

You never know what dwells in the back paddocks of Australia.

    Cheers,

    Carl Clifford
