New birding App

I had a chance to “play” with this app for a while this aft. I found that it does some species well, but has trouble with others. It is only designed to handle 400 species at the moment; with more to be added later. I tested it on some look-alike pairs. It got Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs correct; it also got Boat-tailed and Great-tailed Grackles correct. But it identified my Semi-palmated Sandpiper as a Least Sandpiper. It got Herring, California and Glaucous-winged Gulls all mixed up, and it called my Cassin’s Finch a House Finch. But it is a work in progress – it will be interesting to see just how good it can get!Gary   From: John < in2d@bigpond.com> To: ‘Birding Aus’ < birding-aus@birding-aus.org> Sent: Wednesday, June 10, 2015 5:04 PM Subject: [Birding-Aus] New birding App Hi all, I came across a new App used to identify mainly Nth American birds – however for us Southern Hemi folks I urge you to take a look – it’s fantastic. It’s available for free download from Cornell University Lab of Ornithology – would be terrific if some clever chap designed an App like that for down here. Here are the links to the Uni site and the App: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/Page.aspx?pid=1478http://merlin.allaboutbirds.org/ Regards, John Rose
