I am trying to find some birds

Hi all I am heading north and looking to fill a few holes in my bird list. A Turquoise Parrot as we are heading towards Toowoomba on the way north. The Eungella Honeyeater. The Cassowary I am hoping to get at Mission Beach. And on the way back Albert’s Lyrebird. Any help gratefully received! Christina Port Sent from Windows Mail

Hey Elliot, Just a quick one re Eungella HE, if I may… Do you remember the time of year that you saw them at the very end of Dalrymple Rd, and also along Diggings Rd?? Do you remember what they were feeding on when you saw them at both sites?? Thanx in advance for your advice – it’s always good to get others’ thoughts on a species that we don’t really know all that much about… cheers, martin cachard, trinity beach, cairns

Turqs are usually along Old Wallangarra Rd, near Girraween NP. A bit closer to the freeway and Stanthorpe than Sundown. A good place to look is around the junction with Hickling Lane, but the whole section from here back to the highway is good as well. Eungella HE should be found fairly easily around the carpark at the end of Mt Dalrymple Rd – that’s where I would go first. If you have no luck here, try along Diggings Rd in the afternoon (on the way to Broken River from Eungella, look out for the turn on the right). About 500m up along this road there is a big turning spot – if you reach here you’ve gone a bit far. The best advice I can give is to learn the call, they are pretty easy to get onto when you know it. Can’t help with the Cassowary, I’ve only ever had sighting (of an adult with chicks!) along the Cape Trib Rd somewhere, and I agree with Martin’s spots for the Lyrebird :) Good luck! elliot

Hi Christina Alberts Lyrebird Best and most reliable spot I know for Alberts Lyrebird is the Witches Falls circuit at Tambourine Mountain http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/tamborine/about.html#witches_falls_circuit Park in the main car park and take the high end track in – even along the back of the houses not far in is quite reliable Torquoise Parrots Reasonably close to Toowoomba try Durikai State Forest between Inglewood and Warwick – not easy to get but they are around – will come in to drink generally early morning at the waterholes close to the highway http://www.davidsbirdingimages.com/Australian_bird_images/Photography_sites_1.html Contact me if you want more specific directions on the waterhole locations Cheers David Taylor Brisbane On 5 Jun 2015, at 8:06 am, christinaport@iinet.net.au wrote: David and Marg Taylor Brisbane

Thanks Martin re the timing for the Eungella HE – I dipped when looking for them late last August ( Re Albert’s Lyrebird, Tamborine Mountain in the winter behind the cemetery at Witches Falls section of Tamborine National Park see map – http://goo.gl/CdeCUY Try and be there early and definitely not in the weekend! Cheers, Judy —–Original Message—– martin cachard Sent: Friday, 5 June 2015 9:23 AM Hi Christina (long time no speak!!), I would hit Sundown NP for Turq’s – it’s on the Qld side of the NSW border, west of Tenterfield & Stanthorpe. Best area for them I’ve found in Sundown is in and around that camp area in the south-west section of the NP – just turn west from Tenterfield & then north at Mole River, which is some 50-odd kms west of Tenterfield. The NP entrance to use to hit this particular spot is not too far along the road heading north form Mole River once you cross the Qld border. If you are lucky, you will have Turq’s in the lovely grassy camp area itself – or around the little dam off to the north side of the rd into the camp area, about a km or 2 before you actually reach the camp area itself. This dam is well worth a late arvi or early morn stake-out if needed. For Eungella HE, you will most likely find them into the mistletoe at this time of year – that’s when I got my first one in the 3rd week of June some years back!! Try the junction of Snake Rd-Dalrymple Rd, & up along Snake Rd itself. The mistletoe is pretty obvious & low down in the roadside trees there – good luck! For Cassowary, you would be dreadfully unlucky if you were to miss them around Mission Beach – but if you do miss out there, then hit Etty Bay, just south of Innisfail… For Albert’s LB, I’d first hit the Border Ranges NP (NSW) , & then onto Lamington NP (QLD) on the O’Reilly’s Rd, if you miss out at Border Ranges. At Lamington NP, anywhere in the last 5kms before you get to O’Reilly’s itself should prove worthy. If you miss them there then you can still try Tambourine Mountain further north towards Brisbane… cheers, martin cachard, trinity beach, cairns > From: christinaport@iinet.net.au Turquoise Parrot as we are heading towards Toowoomba on the way north.
