Birders of the Cairns region, Living on a sailing boat we recently took shelter in Mourilyon Harbour, just south of Innsfail. I heard and saw what I thought was a male Forest Kingfisher, with bright white ” headlights” either side of the forehead. However it had the rufous flanks similar to the Nominate race macleayii found only in NT, I thought. (I took a photo of this bird) Could someone familiar with the region offer some idea as to what I saw? Curious birder, Burney Sent from my generic tablet device

Hi Burney, From my experience, the extent of the buffy wash on the flanks of birds all around the country is quite variable with many individuals of both races showing different extents of this wash. I’ve always just put it down to that, rather than being different between races… Cheers, martin cachard. trinity beach. cairns.
