It can be said that it is interesting times for the environment in any State of Australia at the moment. The following link provides information relating to the (Victorian) Forests Amendment Bill 2012 http://www.dse.vic.gov.au/forests/firewood/forests-amendment-bill-2012 .
This Bill seeks to make changes which will formally make way to abolish the need for a domestic firewood permit in Victoria amongst a number of others, but it also sets a maximum of 16 cubic metres of firewood per financial year per household. A total of 16 cubic metres sounds bad enough, but converting this to tonnes this equates to 22.5 tonnes (for River Red Gum volumes) per financial year. In visual terms this is about a semi-trailers worth!!
In NSW, Forests NSW and also NPWS (in their Red Gum program to be reviewed in 2013) have a maximum limit of 6 tonnes per household per year. Anyone who can burn 6 tonnes during an Australia’s colder months is burning their fire 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in an open fire, or has an extremely inefficient wood fire!
Goodbye all you fallen timber dependent birds!
I hope all Victorian’s with non-firewood heating sources apply to Ted’s Government for their $562.50 (based on the cost of $25 per tonne under NSW firewood permit systems) to make all things ‘equal’.

You are correct that green timber weighs more than dry, however 1.4 is the standard used Australia wide (including Forests NSW) for dry River Red Gum (as I indicated in the email). It’s probably why River Red Gum is the preferred source of firewood for many wood fire owners.

Yes, it is surprising how much air there is in a trailer load of firewood. Especially if you buy it in. Then fire wood seems to be measured in reputed tonnes, rather like the old “reputed pint” of beer.

There is an error here – 22.5 tonnes per cubic metre suggests a density of 1.4 for SOLID red gum compared to the CSIRO value of 1.2 for GREEN timber and 0.8 for dry. Collected timber will be mainly dry, and will be “loose” in the trailer. I would not expect a cubic metre of collected firewood to weigh much more than half a tonne.
Despite this, I deplore the amendment.
