A week ago a very good young visiting birder from the US fairly confidently identified a Brown Gerygone in the Dandenongs from both good views and song (unfortunately his ID photo is not good enough to assist in confirming his sighting). My understanding from range maps, atlases and personal experience is that the western limit of this species’ range in Victoria is well east of Melbourne. Looking at my own records I’ve seen Brown Gerygone almost every visit I’ve had to Bunyip and most of the year round, particularly on the eastern side (this is also the only area I’ve seen species like Wonga Pigeon and Pilotbird). Also just having a look at eBird, there’s a handful of records for just east of Melbourne and seem to suggest they’re around most of the year too! Thanks for the info – interesting stuff! Cheers! Hi Richard, Firstly, I hope your American friend had a good time birding in Australia! In terms of the Brown Gerygone, this species appears to be on the increase as their numbers continue to grow in places like the Dandenongs. As far as I’m aware, they have been present in the Dandenongs in small numbers for the last few years, though there are a few scattered sightings dating back to early/mid 2000s. In fact, they’re probably one of the birds to expect when birding in the area now. Walks like Welch Track and through Sherbrooke Forest are pretty good spots to find them. Larger sites a little further out like Bunyip State Park and the Yarra Ranges also host this species and in more solid numbers. I hope that helps!
