Paul Walbridge phoned to advise that the horses running in the 3.00 o’clock race at Randwick today flushed a flock of Silver Gulls which included a gull with a black head! Someone living nearby might like to check for a Franklin’s or similar. I, too, checked out the footage from the 2.45 pm and 3.20 at Rosehill and the 3 pm from Flemington, with no luck. Rosehill Racecourse is near Parramatta and is some km from Sydney Olympic Park. In case, something like this crops up again, please understand that the races on Sky Channel come from several locations. There is a race every 10 minutes, successively from Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide, then Melbourne again, etc. In between races, the cameras can transmit from any one of the four racecourses, showing horses in the mounting yard and on the way to the barrier. It would therefore be quite possible for a casual observer to get the wrong racecourse in the wrong city. The 3.10 pm race was from Morphettville (Adelaide), and there was a 2.52 pm broadcast from Eagle Farm (Brisbane). I have not been able to check these races. There is a further complication. Apart from Sky, some races are also broadcast by TVN. Both channels use the same footage for races, but take their own footage between races. It is common to see birds at all the racecourses. Rosehill has a well known duck pond. If anyone wants to have a look themselves, visit this website: http://www.racingnetwork.com.au/FormandResults/RaceReplaySearch/tabid/108/De fault.aspx In conclusion, I’m sleeping in tomorrow 😉 Cheers, Joshua Bergmark On 1 March 2014 22:41, Bill Stent < billstent@gmail.com> wrote: clashes on TV. _______________________________________________ Birding-Aus mailing list Birding-Aus@birding-aus.org To change settings or unsubscribe visit: http://birding-aus.org/mailman/listinfo/birding-aus_birding-aus.org _______________________________________________ Birding-Aus mailing list Birding-Aus@birding-aus.org To change settings or unsubscribe visit: http://birding-aus.org/mailman/listinfo/birding-aus_birding-aus.org
Foxtel TVN Channel 522 appears to have a recap of all Rosehill races at 0745 Sunday. Race 4 was at 2.45 over 1100m and Race 5 at 3.20 was over 1900m. I suspect it was the latter race as the gulls were probably hanging around the back straight and had been left undisturbed till the first of the longer races. Anyway as time and place of original sighting are at odds with both of these races I’m not hopeful of seeing anything. Sadly, there were no races at Randwick today. Televised races throughout Australia are timed to run at different times to avoid clashes on TV. There was a 3 pm race today, but it was run at Flemington. Perhaps you should look there. Under the circumstances, I feel obliged to advise that the Flemington in question is in Melbourne. Headed out as soon as Mike’s email came through, and found one open gate (accidentally left open?), and was able to walk on the racetrack all the way around. No gulls of any kind unfortunately. Then checked all the open areas of grass in UNSW next door, also finding nothing. I am currently staying on-campus at UNSW, and will be out looking tomorrow and the day after (classes don’t start until Tuesday!), so would really appreciate an immediate text if anyone finds the gull in question!!! (0459 823 534) The racecourse can be best viewed from outside the fence along Alison Rd (-33.907804,151.233275) or from my balcony. Tomorrow I am going to check Centennial Park and Eastlakes, so will post to the list if anything shows.
