Hello, there is no reason that Australia could not have a Birdsong app.
There are already two for the British Birds, so may be someone could instigate an app for Australia?
As some one with a poor memory and little knowledge of Birds here, I would certainly get it
itunes.apple.com/gb/app/bird-song-id-automatic-recognition/id601362210?mt=8
warblr.net
www.chirpomatic.com/
I hope that helps your members, and that they can help get an app made!
Best Regards
S. Mitchell

How many species does it claim to identify, Neil?

Hi All,
There is an Australian version of the Bird Song Id app (itunes.apple.com/au/app/bird-song-id-australia-automatic/id1079325343?mt=8) and it costs AU$5.99 – quite reasonably priced in my opinion – can’t comment on the functionality of it as I haven’t tried it the field yet!

I would assume that the actual development would not be huge. If designed
well the main issue as Peter says would be to include a set of Aussie calls
instead of the existing set. As I haven’t looked at the app not sure if
there would need to be many other changes?

Surely the most efficient way to make that kind of app available is to persuade the authors of warblr, etc, to produce an Australian version by offering funding and probably more importantly, sample recordings.
That said, do you have access to a collection of recordings, S. Mitchell? Just listening to them helps one learn much faster than learning in the field.
