Birding spots

Hi all ? I live not far from base of Mt Warning/Murwillumbah NSW and, because I haven’t had a chance to get out and do much bird photography in the last 6-8 mths, I haven’t explored all the hot spots for reliable/great Birding. The reason for my message: I’m starting up a Birding group for . . . → Read More: Birding spots

Yandina Creek Wetland

Amazing work by Greg Roberts. It’s a significant life-legacy. And the endurance needed to go on so long with this, in the face of dreadful indifference.

Thanks, Greg. Judith

Appeal for Birding Conservation Donations

Dear Birders,

As many of you may know, the ‘Champions of the Flyway’ is an annual event that takes place in Eilat, Israel. This year the event is on March 28th. The event takes the form of a Big Day – essentially a midnight-to-midnight race to see which team can record the most species over . . . → Read More: Appeal for Birding Conservation Donations

Yandina Creek Wetland

Many Australian birders supported the 3-year campaign to protect the Yandina Creek Wetland on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. BirdLife Australia, Birds Queensland and Noosa Parks Association were among the groups that helped. It’s great to report that the campaign paid off and the wetland is to be restored.

Yandina Wetlands

Greg Roberts’ article in this morning’s Weekend Australian is exciting news. I’m sure many of us have followed his reports regarding the draining of the Yandina Wetlands. All credit due to him and others with their persistence in fighting for this draining decision to be reversed.

RFI: colonial breeding birds at Winton?

A request for those birdos who visit or know about the Winton Wetlands.

I noticed on Birdline (1 Feb. Morecrofts) there is mention of ‘breeding event…by herons’ at this location by the List moderator…

If anyone has nesting details of any species at this location, particularly egrets, I am keen to hear from them.

Night Parrot calls

Helo Peter,

Your comment has prompted me to dig this out of my diaries.

31 march 1982 Camped 60 km S of Nullagine on a creek running through red breakaways – very pretty. Some of the spinifex 6 ft high.

About 1930, one or two birds fly nearby and calling, v.parrot like, double whistle doo-wee . . . → Read More: Night Parrot calls

The 20th Great Backyard Bird Count takes place over 17-20 Feb

see gbbc.birdcount.org/news/news-release/

There is also a photo competition … gbbc.birdcount.org/photo-contest-rules/

It will be interesting who the top Australian birder (the individual with the highest species count) is this time around.

Regards, Laurie.
