Wandering Tattler.

Hi Mark & Amanda, firstly congrats on the new addition to the family. Now, I’m flabbergasted to think that there are birders out there that would have a go at you for not reporting something like a Wandering Tattler immediately. First of all it’s a species that once settled into an area for the summer, will usually stay for the duration. Secondly, they should get off their collective fat arses and take the relatively short trip up the NSW coastline, checking out remote headlands (there’s plenty of them) and find their own, it’s a lot more fun!! You never know they might even make it over the QLD border and start to enjoy themselves. Oh, and well done with your persistence in observing this bird and monitoring it and then sharing with others. Cheers – Paul W.

I could not believe that this comment was made by a birdo “A few birdwatchers being semi-disregarding won’t make much of a Difference in the long run..”.

The thing is, birdos should know better, and if they don’t believe that the birds welfare always comes first, then they should find another hobby.

Maybe it would be best for all to take this spat offline!

    Nathan,

As you are aware but choose not to say so, what I was told by an Admin and a fellow poster who is a close friend of yours happened exactly as I portrayed them in my earlier email.

Your comment “A few birdwatchers being semi-disregarding won’t make much of a Difference in the long run..” is indicative of the comments that were directed towards me by both those people. And I disagree. I think it does make a huge difference. In a way, by your comment here you’ve confirmed that I was right to post what I did, because I feel that any watching/photography must be done with consideration of the birds we are watching/photographing! I can’t for the life of my understand how you can say such a thing and still be a birdwatcher!

We as birdwatchers can educate people on the correct way to behave around birds. We can tell people about the importance of bird habitat. We can share our knowledge with others and foster a sense of understanding. We can so do much more than to put another tick on a list. It is up to us the lay person to help educate people about the birds. I do this all the time with people I know and meet on the reef. Rather than being semi-disregarding as you say, and as you do, I choose to go up to people and let them know about the birds they put to flight! And you know what, not one has ever told me off or said anything bad for doing so. Most people are curious and like to see the pictures of the birds in my camera’s viewfinder. They then walk back off the reef very differently. Your comment above clearly shows you don’t think that is important.

If you have no regard for the welfare of birds or the environment that they are in, perhaps you should ask yourself just why are you bird watching in the first place?

    Regards, Mark

Just clearing it up slightly for everyone who ‘had a go’ at him, The comments in question were posted on Feathers & Photos forum (the topic has since been deleted, so no quotes), but in my opinion (and that of pretty much everyone who read it) the posts didn’t show any malice or vindictiveness. They were very polite and not at all rude. I do understand in not reporting it, but the posters are birdwatcher friends, and I don’t want everyone to think of them as arses…

Also, Remember, Long Reef is a place visited by hundreds every weekend (if not day), and that barely any of them give a crap about the birds. A few birdwatchers being semi-disregarding won’t make much of a Difference in the long run..

    Thanks for reading -Nathan
