Why is it that I have the lyrics of “Big Yellow Taxi” swirling around inside my head as I read the “Short Pied Oystercatcher” and “Another bivalve victim” threads?

  1. I apologise unreservedly for starting this discussion, as I’m sure does the footless Pied Oystercatcher.

    I have seen fishing line and plastic bags tangled around birds’ feet and I know that marine bivalves are more than capable of damaging soft tissue and bone to the point of loss of digits and/or feet.

    There may be other ways that birds lose feet or legs; hot BBQ plates, fish, crabs, etc but I have never seen anything to suggest that banding results in physical harm.
