Xeno Canto – Free Bird Calls Website + Redthroats at Bowra

Good evening Birding Ausers,

This is a link to a free bird call site which I am sure many of you will be aware of. Thanks to Sander Bot (a Dutch birder) who kindly emailed me the details again after I lost the piece of paper with the address written on it! It was lovely to play his recording of the Indian Robin from Goa and remember the sites, sights and sounds from that day.

I have just been in playing on the site and have successfully downloaded songs into my iTunes. My understanding is that there are no copyright restrictions and all calls can be downloaded. Recordings of 60% of the world’s bird can be found on this site, so well worth a look/listen! For me having the opportunity to learn at least some calls prior to going to exotic lands will be a wonderful addition to future trip preparations.

Also so much gets written about Bowra that I was not going to put anything on about our recent trip (where Peter again failed to see the Grey Falcon…or the “That which cannot be named” bird) however on our last morning we got great views of 6 or so Redthroat including 3 singing males. This was not at the site marked on the map for Redthroat, but on a near by track very close to the track itself.

Julie tells me this is one of the most commonly missed birds. I left the GPS co-ordinates with Julie and Ian and would be happy to provide more details if requested to do so off site.

Happy birding

Judith

    Hi David,

The good news is that you don’t need to convert the songs for them to play in your iTunes.

Right click on the ‘disc’ icon of the tune you want to copy.Left click on ‘save link as’Save into a created folder – for example I saved the Indian Robin into a folder I named Indian Birdsong and gave it the file name “Indian Robin” (the original file name is not necessarily the name of the bird, for some reason that is beyond me) Open My MusicOpen the folder with the copied calls. Highlight call or calls you want to import into iTunes and drag and drop it/them across into your iTunes music library. It took me a while to find out where they had gone, but you will find them under “artists” – they come across as the name of the person who recorded the call. In my case this was Sander Bot. I clicked on his name, and hey presto the Indian Robin was there. I then dragged and dropped this into the Indian Birds playlist that I had set up before starting.

Sounds a bit laborious but it is quite easy and quick once you get the hang of it.

Hope this all helps – have sent it out to the list as other members may like the same information.

    Kind regards

    Judith

    Hi Judith,

The recordings on Xeno-Canto are copyright but are released under a license that allows use and reuse with some restrictions. Xeno-Canto uses a Creative Commons license which can be found here: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.5/

Basically the license allows you to download or share the unaltered recordings for personal use only. If you use the unaltered recordings for websites, presentations or similar you need to credit the original recordist and source of the recording. Any other use is restricted by the license but these restrictions can be waived by the recordist on request.
