xeno-canto files on iPhone, iPods and other mobile phone gadgets

G’day all

A couple of people have asked for instructions on how to do this…

Cheers Steve

How to get xeno-canto files onto an iPhone or iPod Touch

1. Open xeno-canto in your browser ( I use Firefox but the instructions should be fine for other browsers) 2. Search for the species of interest, with luck a list of recordings will appear 3. Right-click on the floppy disc symbol for the recording you want 4. From the pop-up menu select “Save Link As …” (“Save target as…” in Internet Explorer) 5. Choose where to save the file and what to call it. I don’t change the name of the file and I save to the desktop because you can then find them quickly and you only need the file for a short period 6. Press ‘save’ to save! 7. Open iTunes 8. Select “File-New Playlist” 9. Call the new playlist something like “East Africa Birds” 10. Drag the xeno-canto mp3 files from your desktop onto the new playlist icon 11. Sync your iPhone/iPod Touch 12. That’s it! If all went well you will be able to play the files on your iPhone now and can now delete them from your desktop. They will still be in your iTunes library on your computer.

How to get xeno-canto files onto a non-iPod mobile phone

Steps 1-6 from above

7. If your phone is sophisticated enough it should have storage space that your computer can access. Read the phone manual to find out how this is achieved on your model. My Nokia smartish phone comes with software that runs on my PC. This communicates with the phone via Bluetooth or a USB cable.

What I see is a phone music folder on my computer that I can drag files to. These are transferred to the phone when I run the sync program.

The files are then available for the music player on my phone.

Your phone will have something similar – read the manual. ===============================

    Hi Rosemary,

You are right, but this is a browser issue, not of a website. Your browser has predefined actions for many file types. By default, your browser chose to give you a File dialogue if you click on an mp3. By installing Quick-Time, this program overwrites your browser’s setting, and makes itself the default application to be used when clicking on an mp3. This is essentially an annoying feature of Quick-time, but you can change your browser’s setting if you wish.

On the other hand, try right-clicking in other pieces of software. Most software packages, including Word, Excel, and the like, hide many features under the right-click. Usually some menu pops up with many choices. It’s worth trying it out!

    cheers, Bob xeno-canto.org

It’s the Right Click on the disc symbol which is not intuitive! Took me ages to find that!

In some environments, just left-clicking the symbol will work – it will bring up a little dialogue which asks if you want to Save or Play the track and you can click on Save. But when I installed QuickTime on my PC this no longer worked – QuickTime always popped up straight away and played the track.

Incidentally I use Windows Media Player to do the steps in 7-12 and then to download to my Olympus DS40 or Zen MP3 player – it sounds like a very similar process. But I do change the name of the file, and I split them into folders, to make then more manageable when searching.

There are (from memory) votes or a quality indicator – I have tended only to use those of the highest ranking in the hope that they are good!

As with anything free, there will be mistakes.

Saying that, I have used it a lot and have only had one experience where I thought the identified call was wrong.

Is there any chance the calls are mislabelled? Is xeno-canto moderated?
