Who is this Australian ornithologist – Sir Hubert Wilkins

This has been a great thread. I had literally never heard of this bloke, and he was clearly quite a guy. I have been inspired to check out the brief biography in the Australian Dictionary of National Biography (which is free access, online) and use Bookfinder to track down his own book of exploration, Unknown Australia Thanks to all involved in unforgetting a remarkable Australian Kim Kim Sterelny, School of Philosophy, Research School of the Social Sciences, Australian National University, Acton, 0200, ACT, Australia Kim.Sterelny@anu.edu.au or Kim.Sterelny@vuw.ac.nz 61-(0)2-6125-2886 ________________________________________ From: Birding-Aus < birding-aus-bounces@birding-aus.org> on behalf of Tone < tone@lis.net.au> Sent: Wednesday, 2 December 2015 8:11 PM To: George Appleby Cc: Birding-Aus@birding-aus.org Subject: Re: [Birding-Aus] Who is this Australian ornithologist – Sir Hubert Wilkins Also The Last Explorer by Simon Nasht. $11.99 from iBooks Store Sent from my iPod > On 2 Dec 2015, at 15:56, George Appleby < graappleby@hotmail.com> wrote: > > Hello all. > > There is a fair bit about the mainly unsung Hubert Wilkins around but it does take some digging. Dick Smith was a champion of him for a long time and funded and promoted related expeditions through Australian Geographic, so there are probably numerous articles about HW in the AG magazine. Otherwise there are a couple of books that are probably in libraries or available second hand. The one most likely to be of interest to Birding-ausers is Undiscovered Australia which started with a search for the Paradise Parrot in drought struck and Prickly Pear infested southern Queensland and ranging on collecting trips for fauna in tropical northern Australia. Owing to the support of the US, HW’s papers are held (last time I checked) at the University of Ohio; this material would be a fascinating read if only a bit closer to Australia. > > My interest?
