What are your top10 birding sites?

Okay, we’ve had some great response to the article on Australian Top10 birding sites. But clearly anyone who chooses just 10 is going to leave out a LOT of great places (which is why ours was slightly tongue-in-cheek).

So, prompted by suggestions by a few readers, we’re opening it up to you –

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 10 AUSTRALIAN BIRDING SITES?

They don’t have to be in any particular order. We’re intrigued to see how many we all agree on. We’ll undoubtedly publish these as a map … no doubt of great interest to fellow and honorary Aussie birders. You can either leave your list on birding-aus, email us privately at info@bird-o.com or post a comment here http://bird-o.com/2011/08/09/bird-os-top10-aussie-birding-destinations/

Regards,

Simon.

Hmmm, I suspect your survey will be biased as people will tend to list places in their region, so the list will be weighted towards the regions people live.

OK, here’s my 2 bobs worth, in no particular order of top Australian birding places that are nowhere near where I live:

Iron Range Mt Lewis-Julutten Lawn Hill Gunlom Falls Broome – Roebuck Bay Two People’s Bay Werribee WTP Bruny Island Christmas Island North Keeling Island

    Regards, Laurie.

    Greetings all,

As someone who has done 99.9% of his birding in Victoria, the vast majority of my favourite birding sites are going to be in Victoria. In order, from tenth to favourite:

    10. Gulpa Forest, s. NSW. 8. Otway Ranges, s, Vic. 6. Comet Bore, e. SA. 10. Chiltern area, central Vic. 3. Pink Lakes, nw. Victoria. 7. Cape Schanck, s. Vic. 5. Wyperfeld National Park, nw. Vic. 4. Werribee Sewage Farm, s. Vic. 2. Mallacoota area, e. Vic. 1. Hattah/Kulkyne National Park, nw. Vic.

    Cheers,

    Geoff

    Everyone,

I haven’t noticed anyone else posting their Top 10 Birding Sites on birding_aus so I thought I might get things rolling. I apologise to everyone in South Australia as I have never birded your state (or ticked off Chestnut-breasted Whiteface). Nor have I birded Cape York. In no particular order.

    1) Werribee STW, Vic: for all the obvious reasons. 2) Mt. Lewis, Qld: Wet tropic endemics and other goodies. 3) Bowra Station, Qld: Hall’s, CBQT, Grey Falcon etc. 4) Kununurra, WA: Finches and other northern goodies. 5) Cheyne Beach, WA: Possible to see Whipbird, Scrub-bird and Bristlebird in a morning. 6) Darwin area, NT: Chestnut Rail, Rufous Owl, Rainbow Pitta. 7) Borah TSR, NSW: Threatened woodland species. 8) Lake Cargelligo area, NSW: Mallee and western species. 9) Hobart, Tas: All the Tassie endemics within 20km. 10) Cairns, Qld: Esplanade, Centenary Lakes, mangroves, rainforest etc

    Cheers Grant Brosie Maitland, NSW

…and because the data was gathered from Birding-Aus, the results will also be communicated to the same list.
