Western Ground Parrots die in captive breeding program

Two Western Ground Parrots recently captured at Cape Arid for a captive breeding program at Perth Zoo have died from a respiratory illness. Yet organisers plan to go back to the area in autumn to catch more birds from the tiny remnant population for the program. Just 10 per cent of the bird’s habitat survives following recent bushfires. It’s worth having a discussion about the wisdom of this.
