Western Australia bird sites?

hello all,

I’m going to be in Western Australia at the start of October and I have a few queries.

I will have no transport of my own and don’t drive so I won’t be using a hire car, so bearing that in mind is there any way at all for me to get to Dryandra Woodlands or Perup (those sites mainly for numbat of course)?

Likewise, I can get a bus from Perth to Albany but is there an easy way to get from there to Two People’s Bay (and any recommendations on where to stay or camp), and I can get by bus to Esperance but is there any way to get from there to Cape Arid National Park (for ground parrot)?

Any other alternative sites for good birding (of easy access) would be much appreciated. I’ve never been to Western Australia before so all suggestions are welcome.

Israel

    G’day Israel,

I’ve never tried to sort out alternative transport to the spots you mention, but I unfortunately I suspect it’ll be difficult for all of them – only areas within Perth and a few other major towns are generally easily reachable by public transport. There may be companies that run tours to some of those places, but if there are I suspect they’d be tourist oriented if there are any. I may be wrong though, hopefully someone out there will have some more useful tips!

There are quite a few spots around Perth that are reasonably accessible via public transport, like Herdsman Lake (92 bus from Wellington St Bus Station in the city), Lake Monger (15 bus from Wellington St), Alfred Cove, Kings Park and no doubt others. You may find the Transperth website and journey planner useful for around Perth – http://www.transperth.wa.gov.au/. If you’re keen to do a fair bit of birding outside the Perth area, then I think you’d really need to look at hiring a car – sorry :(

    John
