Wedge-tailed Eagle decline

Natalie and  I left Yamba 23 June and drove west staying at Yetman, Lightning Ridge, Bowra (4 nights), Thargomindah, Olive Downs (4 nights) then across Camerons Corner and down to Lyndhurst. We continued up to the Kimberley via the Tanami,
We kept a comprehensive trip list and did not see a Wedgie until after we had entered South Australia despite an unprecedented (in our experience) amount of road kill in parts of NSW and Qld. We travel across Australia most years but have not previously experienced such a dearth of Wedge-tailed Eagles. We also found that kites (both whistling and black) were much less common than we expected until we got to the Kimberley.
