Hi everyone, Wondering if anyone can help? I’m about to cart the family over to the in-laws at Wagga for 10 days over christmas and am keen to get out and do a little birding! One of my aims on the trip is to find and photograph a Turquoise Parrot as it is the only Neophema I need for a clean sweep of these cool little parrots! I could drive south to Vic and head for the Warby Ranges or somewhere like that but if someone has an area a little closer it would be very much appreciated! I’ve read a few old reports off the thread where Turquoise Parrots had been seen at The Rock Nature Reserve. Can anyone tell me if they are still found in this location? or any other areas nearby? Thanks in advance Chris Steeles www.chrissteelesbirding.blogspot.com ===============================

Hi Chris (and others), Had a tours over the last couple of days and there were a few Turqs at Chiltern (Bartleys and Cyanide Dam) but heaps (over a dozen) in the Warby Ranges. Many pairs have bred and were seen with young birds. Closer to Wagga you could try The Rocks as mentioned, Table Top Reserve, the hills around Albury but they are a little scarcer here and probably (at least in my experience) easier to see in Victoria. This time of the year they birds are quite skittish and wary and you will need to approach them with care. Be patient if they zit-zit-zit off into the forest as they often come back to where you found them for what they may have been feeding on. Good luck, Michael. a ===============================

Hi Chris,
Another good spots to look for turqs at Cocoparra/Binya is along the Binya Forest Dr (prob the most productive place to see them there) and they are also around Falcon Falls. In sunny Vic, they’re at Chiltern (a bit closer than the Warbys). If you go there try Bartley’s Block (on the Chiltern Howlong Rd, 3 km from town) and the bush s-e of the Honeyeater Dam. In the Warby’s I’ve seen them at the Pine Gully Picnic Area and Wenhams Camp (most often on west side of the track leading into Pine Gully). Keen to know if you do go to the Rock NR. It sounds really interesting; I’ve noticed a few NSW birdline records from there.
Cheers,
Tim Dolby

Hi all,
When I was in Binya/Cocoparra last year I saw them near the campsite in the NP just off the main road on your left when you enter from the Stock Route road from the south (Binya side).
It’s a great spot around that campsite with Glossy Black Cockatoos, Mulga Parrots and Speckled Warblers all there alongside a couple of Turquois parrots – well worth the 2 hour trip from Wagga.
Cheers,
Ed

Hi Chris Try Binya SF just east of Griffith – this reserve abuts the southern boundary of Cocoparra NP – they are in Binya also, in small numbers. Grenfell SF to the N of Wagga is exceptional for them too, esp the E boundary of the SF. Cheers,Martin Cachard, Cairns, 0428 782 808

Hi Chris,
If you dip at The Rock and decide to go to the Warby’s, look for the TPs at Wenham’s clearing. If you can’t see it on the map, get back to me and I will ask Gavin (an ex Wangaratta lad), to dredge up the directions from his memory bank – I could only remember how to get there if I was driving!
It also may be worth considering going to Cocoparra National Park near Griffith. Cocoparra is slightly closer to Wagga Wagga than the Warby’s and is also a good spot for TPs – hopefully someone will be able to give you specific places to look for them there.
Finally, if you still have no luck and if you ever get up to Queensland, I know a paddock near Girraween National Park (just over the NSW/QLD border) where you would have a 9 out of 10 chance of seeing them.
Good luck!!

Hi Chris
They are still found at the Rock NR, but they are elusive little guys.
I have also recorded them in the flora reserve on the Tumbarumba road, about 3kms from the Hume Highway intersection where the road turns off to Humula. This was in early 2006 where I saw a small flock, about ten birds. Also in 2006, a pair at Little Billabong, about 10kms south of there.
Cheers,
Steve Sass
