Vale Terry Pacey

Terry Pacey was an active birder in South-east Queensland, the Darling Downs and the Solomon Islands. He was an active participant on Birding Aus a few years ago – some birding aussers may recall that he found a Painted Snipe lurking in a wetland fed by a leaking water pipe on the Gold Coast around the time that Sean Dooley was doing his Big Twitch. Tee Pee (as he was known to his mates) was very helpful to birders trying to spot species on his patch – I remember receiving some useful pointers as to where to look for Painted Honeyeaters on the Darling Downs. Other birders received handy tips for finding birds around Lamington and the Gold Coast. Terry always liked to have a chat about birds and birding, and I enjoyed several visits to his home on the Gold Coast. Terry suffered from a number of long-term illnesses. Terry’s wife Sue has informed me that Terry passed away on Wednesday night and that his funeral will be held at the Allambe Memorial Park on Monday. Regards, Laurie. ===============================

Terry and I shared two great passions – birding, and Apple computers. I was never fortunate enough to meet Terry in person, but we chatted by phone a number of times about these two interests. It was a shock to learn of his death and to realise that many of us have lost a friend, and that the birding world has lost one of its most generous and ardent supporters. Our condolences go to his wife, Sue, who like Terry has been in and out of hospital many times over the last few years; and to his daughter, sons and grandchildren.

    Oh, that is sad.

By the time that Ruth and I met Terry a few years ago, he was already too ill to do much birding. On one birding trip to SE Qld, Ruth and I called in to Terry and Sue’s place on the Gold Coast. The weather was absolutely terrible so we sat under Terry and Sue’s back verandah and chatted about birds and birding – and especially about Terry’s time in the Solomons. Sue brought out some wonderful light and fluffy and cheesy muffins – Ruth and I, of course, complimented Sue on her lovely muffins. Oh no, she said, these aren’t my muffins, they’re Terry’s! So Terry told us that they were the simplest muffins possible – and wrote down the recipe for us:

1 cup self-raising flour 1 cup grated cheese (any sort) 1 cup milk

Mix ingredients and spoon into a muffin tray. Cook for 25 minutes at 180C.

Terry liked this recipe because it was so easy, and the ingredients could pretty much be obtained anywhere – including in the remote parts of the Solomons. They also told us that you could add other ingredients such as herbs if you want.

For those that have birded with Ruth and I, then you’re probably familiar with our “Birding Muffins”. Well, these muffins are based on Tee Pee’s recipe – it was him that gave us the idea of cooking muffins and taking them on birding trips! For the record, our variation on Tee Pee’s basic muffin recipe is:

1 cup self-raising flour 1 cup grated cheese (any sort – often times we’ll use a blend of cheddar, mozzarella and parmesan) 1 cup milk 1-2 rashers diced bacon 1/2 cup or so of frozen corn kernels Dried chilli flakes to taste

Fry the diced bacon until cooked, then mix that and all the other ingredients together and spoon into a muffin tray. Cook for 25-30 minutes at 180C.

We shall always remember Terry, every time we go birding and eat a “Birding Muffin”. For those of you that never met Terry but come birding with Ruth and I, if you ever have a “Birding Muffin” with us, Terry will live on.

Our deepest condolences to Sue and family. Please know that Terry was loved and respected by those that met him and knew him.
