Hi all,
Apologies to all those for whom this is old hat, but Illawarra Birders have recently set up a Twitter account for the purpose of notifying unusual sightings in the local area. This is a great service to members, getting the word out about rarities via ‘tweets’ either directly to their smartphone Twitter apps, or by text message to conventional mobiles. It is also a useful promotional tool; we have acquired followers that are not (yet) club members, including a local journalist and a Mayor. Of course ethical considerations have to be borne in mind before tweeting a rarity; in particular nesting site locations will not be divulged. User access to the account is restricted to nominated committee members; local birdwatchers are encouraged to report any rarities on our Twitchline.
We received some great publicity in the local press about this; as you can imagine, headline writers can’t resist a story about twitchers tweeting on Twitter.
If your club is not already tweeting and would like to know more, I have put up a few pointers on our website at http://www.illawarrabirders.org/twitcherscorner1.html
It would be great when travelling across the country to a new birding destination, to be able to sign up to the local Twitter account and get details of the latest sightings. If you’re visiting the Illawarra, please feel free to follow @IllawarraBirder and we will tweet you!
Cheers,
Martin Potter

That’s if you know what the local twitter account is. Will these tweets be relayed to Birdline?
I know that Twitter and Facebook are valuable for collecting information like this because lots of people use them anyway and find it easy, but it does lead to the data being more scattered and harder for others to find.
