Top 10 Sites – Eyre

Stephen Ambrose mentioned the Eyre Bird Observatory. I should have included it my extra list. It didn’t come close to my top 10 because access is difficult, and most of the birds are mallee birds which are easier to find in Fitzgerald River NP. But the EBO is special. And if you include Arubiddy Station (you need to ask permission from the Brown’s), then it is certainly a great place. As well as the birds at the EBO, on Arubiddy Station you can find (Naretha) Blue Bonnet, Cinnamon (Nullarbor) Quail-thrush, Orange Chat, Rufous Fieldwren, Slnder-billed Thornbill, Inland Dotterel, Ground Cuckoo-shrike and a chance of Scarlet-chested Parrot.

The track down the escarpment to Eyre is no longer the problem. The track was done up a few years ago. Any 4WD should be able to navigate it fairly easily now. The 10km sandy track is more of a problem, and you must deflate your tyres so that you don’t damage the track. But as Stephen said, you can leave your car at the top of the escarpment and arrange for a lift to the EBO if you prefer.
