Ok, this is a really specific request and I don’t expect that such a product exists, however…. At present I keep my life list on an ioc spreadsheet, and I simply bold the spp I have seen. However it gets a pain when new editions are issued. What I really want is a program that has the ioc list where I can tick the species I have seen. It automatically updates, and when it does it sends helpful messages such as “4 species you have ticked have been affected by splits/lumps”, “a species you have ticked has been moved to a different family”. Any suggestions? John Leonard

Greetings Dom et al I too use Bluebird Technology’s “Bird Journal” program; have since its inception with Version 1 [currently running Version 3]. As an inveterate writer of long notes on my sightings I find its various ancillary functions [e.g. nine types of data presented in graph form] invaluable as background information. It also provides “Location” editing functions and a “Species” function [which automatically keeps tally of your Life List or a list of country/regional/etc. sightings]. A more recent addition was the ability to tag your sightings to a map. Cheers Julian

I use a piece of commercially available software called BirdJournal from Bluebird Technology. I have the “complete” version that covers all countries. You can imput using either IOC / Clements or individual countries adopted list such as C & B for Aus. It also has other non avian taxa checklists such as Aus Butterflies / Mammals etc. The software is updated regularly to reflect changed in classification. You can also add photos and annotation for individual sightings at the moment it does not handle videos or sound recordings but you can link via the comment facility.
