G’day folks,
Had a photograph sent in of a couple of terns this morning in an outer suburb of Alice Springs – it’s been raining again. I’ve been vacillating between White-winged Black Tern and Whiskered Tern but can’t quite convince myself either way.
If anyone more experienced with these birds would like to have a look, I’d appreciate any comments you have. The picture of both birds is at the following link;

Thanks for your help.

Hi Chris,
Your birds look like White-winged Black Terns to me. The black on the head appears to form the little black earmuffs that WWBT have and Whiskered lack. I’m sure there are other ways of telling them apart but for me that is the quickest and most reliable in the field.
Cheers, Chris Sanderson
