I have just moved from Alice Springs to Darwin after 26 years. During the last big wet in 2000 / 2001 we had a similar occurrence of out of area birds arriving in the Centre (Rufous throated HE; Brown Quail down as far as the Olgas; Pheasant Coucal in the Todd; Restless Flycatcher near Newhaven and Latham’s Snipe; Golden-headed Cisticola / Starling / Letter-winged Kite at the Ponds, even a report of Black Bittern south of the Alice! I spoke to John Watson recently about some of his sightings and mentioned this – expect the unexpected!

Hi all,
Just received a report from Michael Green of small population (at least 8 individuals) of Tawny Grassbird at Ilparpa Swamp in Alice Springs (see http://www.eremaea.com/BirdlineRecentSightings.aspx?Birdline=6).
Of interest the nearest records of Tawny Grassbird to Alice Springs are from Riversleigh on the Gregory River near Mt Isa, and from Kalkarindji (Wave Hill) near Timber Ck. Both sites are approx. 1000 km from Alice.
Good conditions in central Australia may have helped this bird expand into areas previously unrecorded, presumably moving along river and flood systems. Another option is displacement due to floods.
Cheers,
Tim Dolby
