I haven’t seen “The Big Year” as yet, but do plan to purchase the Blu-ray when available.

For those interested in the Blu-ray, there is a review up on High-Def Digest already: http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/6281/big_year.html

    Cheers, Scott White. ===============================

i am surpised no one has mentioned the stuffed White-cheeked Honeyeater and Superb Fairywren in his collection, as well as an Eastern Rosella he was stuffing when the police came around. Regards Alastair

    Me too!!

On such obsessive people… I was astonished to discover a friend who is a member of Aus Trek, Dr Who Fanclub, et al; who was dropping something off to me last night wearing a Spock T-shirt; had not been watching Outland!!! Amazing!! He is also a rail enthusiast too!! But, not a birder. And how is Outland related to Birding-Aus? Well as they say on their ABC website “Outland is a series about belonging, no matter who you are, and how everyone searches to find a place to fit in.”

But surely their local bird watching comp would end in Mid-Summer? Wendy

Tony, I’m a birder, and I found it very funny!!

Living in the country being on the committee of every organisation in the district is very likely for some people, especially if they don’t have a full-time paying job! I am in about 8 organisations and have been on committees for most of them, and a few others I’ve joined and left over the years because I had too much to do! Elizabeth Shaw Phillip Island Victoria

I also thought that the binoculars were very large and appeared heavy for birdwatchers to be using and the way that the person handled the bird caught in the mist net was not the way an experienced bander would have done. However it was, after all, just a story Nan, as our granddaughter says to my wife when she gets emotionally involved in a drama.

    Hi, Everyone.

Did anyone notice that not once did a birdwatcher have his or finger on the focussing knob when looking through their binoculars?

  • Dave Torr

Yes – for some reason my wife found that funny!

All just a bit of light, good hearted fun!

I especially liked the line about all birders being “self-obsessed maniacs”.

The list of North American birds they were going through when trying to identify something from the hide was strange. Also one assumes a Hoopooe would turn up in summer, yet it was two days from the end of the annual twitching competition so presumably late Dec!

I reckon the Mrs Barnaby (both of them) are up to their necks in the crimes. Every time there is a murder they are in the vicinity.

On the bird side of things the mist net strung across the gateway was interesting and the net used to wrap the victims was either a fishing net or an extremely large mesh mist net.

A local birdo reckons he recognised all of the members of the Ornithological Society or at least knew local equivalents of them.

The reel to reel tape recorder was also an interesting prop!!

Despite all of this I like to relax in front of the TV and watch Midsomer Murders. It is a bit of light hearted drama. But I agree they will run out of residents to murder at some stage.

What I never understood about the earlier episodes, and it’ll likely apply to these as well, is that his wife was on every committee in the Village/s, but he had to introduce himself every time. Plus after all those murders why weren’t more houses up for sale? And another thing…. My wife is hooked on the show and simply refuses to listen to my very logical tirades. John Mc

But, Carl – half the population of Britain seem to have been bumped off by now, in the series!! Odd that anyone still lives in the Midsomer area :-)

Just as well it’s all fiction. Mind you, I’ve heard that twitchers over there get very competitive, but these caricatures were rather exaggerated….weren’t they?!! Hmmm……. Cheers Peter Madvig

  • Carl Clifford

Well, we were getting a fair bit of interference that night from another channel. The interference did have quite a few Silver Gulls on a large grassy area, though.

Don’t feel that bad about watching Midsomer, there are people out there that have been watching Coronation Street since the series 1. That’s middle of last century.

    Cheers,

    Carl Clifford

Shame on you Carl, You clearly were not watching the ‘gripping’ episode closely enough. We saw it (Hoopee) several times including in a Police evidence bag and (I think) being tossed in a car boot in said bag. Yes it was a shame there was not more real bird stuff in it, but maybe there was a little more variety in the soundtrack. A little less of the obligatory ?fox? calls and ?magpie? calls that seem to continuously punctuate the show representing ‘night’ = ?fox? and ‘day’ scenes = Eurasian Magpie chacker, chacker call.

I keep finding myself watching this show. It is like being trapped watching a car crash. While it is a relief to not be still getting the umpteenth repeats of the previous Barnaby BUT it is unbelievable how they continue to create these astonishingly unbelievable episodes. Clearly the Roman treasures episode producers had never watched Time Team! Wendy

Yes, we never did see the Purple-crested Hoopoe.

Hopefully better than the weekend’s Midsomer Murders set in a birding club!

I was disappointed the murder in Midsomer Murders wasn’t over a birding issue.

I’ve seen The Big Year, and enjoyed it. Not to be taken seriously though.

Interesting…but picking up on an earlier set of comments about this film on a wider theme, I have met several professional but non-birding colleagues who travel a bit that have seen the film on planes over the last few weeks…and all said they enjoyed it – and I don’t think they were humouring me (some didn’t know of my birding interest until after commenting on the film). A couple even asked me if I had seen it yet. Cheers Tom Wilson

Yes it was meant to be 1st March and that’s what they said on ‘Today’ too, but I can’t find anywhere on Google that’s showing it and neither can my son and he’s a whiz at that kind of thing.

Probably have to get it online or DVD which is a shame because any birdy stuff would probably be best on a big screen.

It was reviewed quite favourably ( very recently) on the Today show, I didn’t register the release date.

Not sure, but it was a bit of a flop in the US apparently, so not sure whether any cinemas here will give it a run, might have gone straight to DVD? BirdLife WA is aiming to have a screening of it, but not sure we’ve found a cinema that’s showing it, so may have to sort it out with a DVD! John
