Shepparton (Vic) birding

Hi all I’m being sent to Shepparton for a couple of days (probably the 24th and 25th of November). I’m going to be working at a couple of electorate offices for the Parliament, but I’m hoping that I might be able to sneak off either in the evening or maybe early in the morning. Can anyone let me know of a good birding spot, relatively close by, that I can access in, say, less than 30 minutes? I’m hoping I’ll have a car available to me. Bill

And in Shepparton itself, there’s always the Victoria Park Lake. Worth an early morning walk. Anthea Fleming On 11/11/2014 1:53 PM, Bill Stent wrote:

On the other side of the river and a little further south is Gemmill Swamp, accessed via Mooroopna. I don’t know how it compares to Reedy Swamp. Peter Shute Sent from my iPad

Hey Bill, One good spot very nearby (you could walk there) is Reedy Swamp Wildlife Reserve, just north west of town. See http://tinyurl.com/lfurvn7. It’s beside the Goulburn River, and you get good numbers of waterbirds i.e Hardhead, Shoveler, Black-tailed Native-hen, Crakes, Rails, Latham’s Snipe and it’s a nesting site for things like Pelican, Royal Spoonbills and Great Egret. Also good for White-bellied Sea-Eagle, Dollarbird, Rainbow Bee-eater, White-breasted Woodswollow, Rufous Songlark, Brown Quail, Little Friabird, Blue-faced and Black-chinned Honeyeater, White-throated and Western Gerygone, and Diamond Firetail. From what I know, there are also occasional records of Bush Stone-curlew, Barking Owl, Greg-crowed Babbler, Speckled Warbler, White-backed Swallow and Little Bittern (in the rush around the lake) – so keep you eyes and ears open. Murray River Tortoise, Yellow–footed Antechinus and Squirrel Glider also occur there, so, worth checking out.
